The Arizona State Poker Championship at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale attracted a whopping 3,546 entrants who anted-up $1,100 for a chance at the glass trophy and the $525,700 that came with it.
And the player who would end up with all the chips and the lion’s share of the prize pool is Brandon Mitchell, who locked-in his fourth six-figure score in four years. This one, though, is his career-best. The cash pushes Mitchell’s lifetime poker tournament winnings up and over the $1 million mark, with $2 million coming up quick.
The former state highway patrolman now has nearly $1.5 million in tournament winnings, launched by a $327,817 score in 2023 he captured by winning a $1,000 event at the Wynn Summer Classic.
A year later, he added another $239,451 to his stack finishing fourth in a $3,000 event at the World Series of Poker.
And then this summer, he finished fifth in the $25,000 No Limit Hold’em/Pot Limit Omaha High Roller Eight-Handed event at the WSOP for a another $303,773
“My whole family is here supporting me,” the Arizona resident said after the win. “My wife couldn’t be here, she’s in Oregon, out of state, but she’s on FaceTime right now.” He then walked over and grabbed the phone, screaming “Let’s F-in go” and everyone cheered and smiled.
The top six players earned at least six-figures, and they were Christopher Collins, Zachary Powers, Hayley Hanna, Nicholas Rogers, David Levy, and Mitchell. Rounding out the top nine were Senh Cong, James Pausch, and Mark Evangelista.
While Mitchell had the power of his family behind him, so did Haley Hanna, whose high-stakes playing husband, David Peters, flew in to watch his wife crush her career-total of $54,000 with a $157,900 cash.
Talking Stick Resort filled the Arizona State Poker Championship with thousands of entrants by guaranteeing a $2 million prize pool and holding four starting days beginning Aug. 14. The entire event took six days, and players were able to reenter during the week.
