Poker superstar Daniel Negreanu spent some time among the good people that populate r/poker on Reddit answering their questions — and he didn’t disappoint, answering nearly 40, ranging in topics from the future of online poker as artificial intelligence takes hold, to how he’d saved his hairline.
And here they are:
Q: Any updates on Game of Gold season two?
Negreanu: Unfortunately, I don’t see it happening, but who knows, that could change. I thought it was great stuff.
Q: Do you really stay in the Daniel Negreanu suite at King’s Casino in Rozvadov?
Negreanu: Ha! I did stay in it for a night but we moved to another room cause Amanda hates the smell of cigarette smoke and someone next door must have been a chain smoker haha.
Q: Do you think the “big beautiful bill act” with the 90% cap on loss deductions will ruin live tournaments in America?
Negreanu: I think that part will get repealed. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s like 72% to get done since both sides of the aisle agree it’s really stupid and unfair, and I know for a fact the guy at the top thinks it’s stupid and unfair.
Q: What happened to the Choice Center “cult”?
Negreanu: LOL, it’s not a cult. It is an excellent course on Emotional Intelligence using experiential learning. If you look up the definition of a cult, Choice is the opposite of all the key markers. I know hundreds of people who went through it, and less than a handful who didn’t think it was a life changing experience for them.
Q: What are your thoughts on learning poker as a beginner today? Classic methods or modern approach?
Negreanu: I think a combination of learning and studying theory and once you have a decent handle on that, using some more old school methods, like feel and instinct. The best players in the world, while they understand theory, they aren’t slaves to it.
Q: How do you think online poker will be doing in 5 to 10 years?
Negreanu: I think it will constantly have to evolve and grow in different ways. Lots of sharp cookies out there always looking for an edge, so you need to get creative on ways to keep the ecosystem healthy.
Q: Did you really switch from a bleeding heart liberal to a MAGA supporter?
Negreanu: No. I consider myself politically homeless and don’t align with either party in their current state.
Q: How did you restore your hairline?
Negreanu: Zero medication at any point. Very common procedure these days, it’s your own hair follicles that they move from the back of your head and put them up top.
Q: How much have you made from poker vs. endorsements?
Negreanu: I’m truly terrible with money and have no idea. Money is never what drove me, and I always had an abundant mindset ever since I was young.
Q: Will AI make online poker obsolete?
Negreanu: It’s a cat and mouse game. AI will be a weapon players use to try and get an edge, but operators will also have access to these tools and be able to spot it—hopefully!
Q: What needs to change for the next WSOP in Vegas?
Negreanu: Ideally in the future we get to chess clocks, but until we do, every tourney with a buy-in $5k or greater needs to go with shot clocks. Too many angle shooters stall with impunity. At least with a clock, if they take too long they have to pay by using a time bank.
Q: Does being an ambassador interfere with your profitability as a pro?
Negreanu: I don’t really, but it’s a fair question. It’s never been something I questioned—I’ve balanced playing and promoting well enough that it doesn’t take much away from my ability to play well. Also on tech: It’s a cat-and-mouse game, operators must stay ahead of cheaters.
Q: Who’s your idol?
Negreanu: Not sure I have one, but I admire many people including Bob Marley.
Q: What age is the peak for poker?
Negreanu: It used to be said that 40–45 is that sweet spot, and that probably still holds true. Although at 51 I’m definitely better and sharper than I’ve ever been.
Q: Would you start a High Stakes Poker–style cash game show again?
Negreanu: Not me personally, I’m more of a tourney guy these days and much prefer that format to cash games.
Q: Is there still significant money to be made in poker today?
Negreanu: If you are really good, you can still make loads of money. Years ago, you could just be OK and win because the bad players were so bad. Today casual players are better, and the best are even better. Middle-of-the-road players may not cut it anymore.
Q: Will early High Stakes Poker always be the golden age?
Negreanu: Probably, but who knows.
Q: What’s your favorite (or worst) hand that lives rent-free in your head?
Negreanu: Year 2000 WSOP Main Event—Carlos Mortensen won, I was chip leader with 12 left and finished 11th after AK vs. 66 in a massive pot. Flop JT3, bricked turn and river.
Q: What advice for bankroll management when going pro?
Negreanu: Don’t do what I did lol. Poker is easier now for bankroll management because you can drop down in stakes. When I started, there was just one game, no option to play smaller, so I went broke many, many times!
Q: Who do you most enjoy playing against?
Negreanu: Gotta be Phil Hellmuth because it’s funny to watch him mumble when he loses a pot lol.
Q: How has marriage affected your poker?
Negreanu: Really nice to have a support system where no matter how good/bad my day was, I come home and won the lottery because she is there waiting for me.
Q: Do you ever play drunk?
Negreanu: I used to for sure! Kinda fun actually and a good way to blow off some steam.
Q: What happened when you gave Phil Ivey $20k of your bankroll?
Negreanu: He paid it back in about a month after winning ~$200k at Commerce playing Stud every day. As for me, by 2002, I was already playing $4k/$8k limit and had several million. And personally, I play better when money matters, worse when it doesn’t.
Q: What’s your favorite sandwich?
Negreanu: Vegan Reuben: sauerkraut, thousand island, faux corned beef, provolone, on Jewish Rye.
Q: Thoughts on mystery bounty tournaments?
Negreanu: They’re super popular and give everyone a shot at a big score. Strategy: Build a big stack and go for as many bounties as possible, even with bad hands.
Q: Who is the best NL tourney player in the world right now?
Negreanu: Really hard to answer, and I’ve learned it’s best not to say—don’t want to give someone a psychological edge when I play them.
Q: Why don’t you play Hustler Casino Live? Would Amanda?
Negreanu: Haha she wouldn’t want to I promise.
Q: Is aging an advantage or disadvantage in poker?
Negreanu: Advantages: Wisdom, financial security. Disadvantages: Young players are hungrier and learn new trends; older guard can get complacent.
Q: How did poker affect relationships with family/friends?
Negreanu: My social life became mostly poker players, didn’t live a normal life. My mother was skeptical at first, but came around when I succeeded. My dad always knew I’d be fine.
Q: What’s your net worth?
Negreanu: No idea.
Q: Why did you cameo in the movie Detention?
Negreanu: I do cameos in Joseph Kahn’s movies. Met him during a poker campaign and became friends, so I invested. Also appeared in Bodied and Katy Perry’s Waking Up in Vegas video.
Q: Does Phil Hellmuth have autism?
Negreanu: Definitely not autistic IMO. I think what you were looking for was insecure and narcissist—but in the best ways!
Q: Are you MAGA now?
Negreanu: What brought you to this incorrect conclusion? I’m not a Republican. I’m a registered Independent who considers himself politically homeless. Neither party reflects my core values.
Q: What’s your favorite poker memory and worst bad beat?
Negreanu: (Not fully answered, but referenced multiple times—biggest was losing AK vs 66 at 2000 WSOP Main Event 11th place.)
Q: Will GGPoker add Omaha Hi-Lo or more mixed games?
Negreanu: Man I hope so! I would love to see mixed games introduced. I think it will happen.
