To play a desperate gambler, Colin Farrell lived in a Macau casino for two months
The Irish actor joins Q’s Tom Power to discuss his new film, Ballad of a Small Player
Colin Farrell has been on a roll the past few years, picking up two Golden Globes — one for his starring role in the Batman spin-off series The Penguin and the other for his tender performance in The Banshees of Inisherin.
Now, Farrell is continuing his winning streak, ironically, by playing a guy who keeps losing. In his latest film, Ballad of a Small Player, Farrell plays a desperate gambler whose addiction leads him to the baccarat tables of Macau (often referred to as the Las Vegas of China).
Baccarat is a high-stakes, high-reward card game of chance. There’s really no skill involved, just luck. Farrell spent two months in Macau while shooting this film, living in hotels and casinos alongside real-life high rollers.
