World Series of Poker Pulls Documentary After Creator Admits Using Fake AI-Generated Quotes

A documentary featuring some of the most electric and successful poker players currently working has been pulled by the World Series of Poker after it was discovered that filmmakers used Artificial Intelligence to make up quotes.

Alan Keating, a star on the high-stakes cash game streams like Hustler Casino Live!, called out producer Dustin Ianotti for literally putting words in his mouth by using AI in the docuseries “No Limit,” which was taped during the World Series of Poker Paradise in the Bahamas last year.

Funded by the WSOP and its owner, GGPoker, Ianotti said his crew put more than 700 hours on tape during 16 days in the Bahamas. Players like Kristen Foxen, Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, Jesse Lonis, Phil Hellmuth and many others gave the crew hours of their time in formal sit-down interviews during the series.

Ianotti, who owns Artisans on Fire, a Las Vegas-based production company that makes promo videos and commercials, admitted he used AI to make-up quotes. Here’s the text from a now-deleted post on X:

“We used AI technology on two brief sequences during post-production, totaling approximately 10 seconds across the 55 total minutes of episode 5 and 6. As we’ve discussed with Alan directly, we should have consulted him on these editorial choices.

Episode 5 has received an overwhelmingly positive response, with many viewers specifically citing their enjoyment of Alan’s segments.

Separately, as Alan’s YouTube production team, we’ve always had his best interests in mind and remain committed to our creative partnership. We wish this had been handled privately, but we understand emotions can run high with regards to creative work.

We stand by our work and the overall integrity of the docuseries.”

That excuse was obviously not good enough for the WSOP, which made the whole series private on its YouTube channel Monday. Here’s what it said about the controversy:

“WSOP has recently learned that AI-generated content was used in the No Limit docuseries to alter players’ words without authorization. We have removed the videos and will redo the editing to ensure the final product reflects our standards. We sincerely apologize to everyone affected and appreciate your understanding,” the statement on X read.

To summarize, Ianotti admitted to PokerNews he used to AI to analyze things Keating has said in the past to make it sound like the words were actually formed in Keating’s vocal chords and shaped by his tongue.

While Ianotti said AI was only used on Keating’s quotes, this was disputed by Alex Keating, a player who also appeared in the series. Alex, who is not related to Alan, took to X to say his voice was edited and spliced in a recent episode.

“Disappointed with @GGPoker @WSOP.,” he wrote. “They’ve clearly added a fake voice in for me, and re-edited things without context. I never agreed to this. I was a feature player for an episode that I think will be coming out soon. I no longer want to be a part of this, and I do not give consent to voice-over and spliced editing.

Please contact me before releasing more episodes.”

Yikes!

Ianotti has been part of the poker industry since at least 2010, when he worked as a Marketing Consultant for PokerNews before moving to a position with PokerStars as Head of Team Pro, according to LinkedIn. He also worked in the marketing department of Full Tilt Poker and Ultimate Gambling.
